Hello! My name is Marielle Crowell and I am in my fifth year
at OU now. I graduate in May (yay!) with a degree in Microbiology and
Psychology and a minor in chemistry. I was recently accepted into OU Medical
School (yay again!) so I will begin there next fall. I am SUPER excited to be
done with my undergrad degree as it has been a long time coming. I actually
took the India Epics course three whole years ago and have always planned on
taking the mythology course and have finally found time in my schedule to fit
it in. I linked my old storybook down below if anyone is interested! I really enjoyed
that class and recommend it to anyone thinking about taking it. Let’s see... I
will not tell you about any of my classes because they are all boring terrible science
classes that make me want to cry. I used to have hobbies but really for the
past three years my only hobby has been trying to get into medical school
(joking but not really). I do like to cook, work out, and read when I have the
time. Currently watching through all the harry potters again now that they are
on HBOGo. I used to knit when I was younger and would really like to knit
little hats for babies for the American Red Cross or something but so far my
schedule does not allow time for that. Have recently taken up yoga but I think
my downward dog is far too terrible for me to consider that a “hobby” yet. I
have two part-time jobs, I work in a little boutique in the mall mostly for a
clothing discount and then I also scribe for doctors in an emergency room in
Midwest City. Scribing means I chart for them when we go into rooms and
interview patients. It is overnight so that is hard but it is super relevant to
what I want to do so I feel really lucky to have that position. I’m super
excited for this class and really anything that doesn’t have the word cell or
chemistry in it!
Retro Storybook: The Goddess's Safe Haven
A random cute picture of me and my twin sister when we were little and my mother made us wear horrendous matching outfits and apparently sit on even more horrendous couches. But it was the 90's what can you do. That's me on the right.
Photo cred to my grandfather who I remember was majorly PO'd that I insisted on having my baby in the picture.
Oh wow, Marielle, CONGRATULATIONS on your acceptance into medical school. It is really exciting to see when years of hard work and persistence lead someone to their goal! Yay! And your "safe haven" Storybook is very much in the archive, one that I share again and again with students for ideas and inspiration; in fact, it is also the screenshot on this topic page for the India class: Project Idea: Devi, The Goddess ... those topic pages are something new that I created last summer, and you'll find topic pages for Myth-Folklore when you get to the brainstorming later this week. Working in an emergency room sounds very intense and dramatic... I am glad you have an opportunity to be gaining skills and experience right now that will be so valuable in the future. And I think I am pretty sure that the UnTextbook, big and sprawling as it is, does not have the words cell or chemistry in there. But I can share with you an amazing thing: The Periodic Table of Storytelling! Every element links to a page at TVTropes, full of story ideas :-)
ReplyDeleteI am a huge Harry Potter fan so I am glad to see you are watching them all again! I actually have a Harry Potter tattoo on my left forearm that reads "All was well." so I am a bit of a fanatic. I tried to be pre-med but dropped it, so kudos to you! It sounds like you earned your entrance to OU Medical School even if the journey was full of tears! Good luck there.
ReplyDeleteHi Marielle! I loved reading your intro! Congratulations on graduating and getting into medical school! Harry Potter movies are some of my favorites. My mom, sister, and I own them all and will have our own marathons where we watch them together, complain that we can’t have the director’s cuts from TV, and loudly compare them to the books. I used to work at the mall, as well! I worked in Earthbound) when there was a different manager) a little over a year ago. I hope you have better luck in the mall than I did! It’s very cool that you have a twin sister, and I think the matching 90s outfits are very cute! Good luck with this course and medical school, I can’t wait to read the stories you write for this class! (PS, love your storybook from the other class!)
ReplyDeleteWow, congrats on med school!! That's a huge accomplishment, so good for you! With chemistry and microbiology, I'm sure a lot of your time here at OU was spent studying. I'm majoring in Chemical Biosciences, so I feel some of that pain! Also, I cracked up at your downward dog comment. I remember the first time I took yoga, I was like wondering how everyone around me could get their hands to close to their feet without bending their knees! It's definitely something that has to be worked on a lot. I'm also a scribe in OKC! I can vouch for the overnight shifts being on the not-so-great side, but you're right, the experience is definitely worth it. How long have you been a scribe?
ReplyDeleteHi Marielle!
ReplyDeleteHow awesome that you're going to medical school! I know that's not easy by any means, and takes lots of time to do. Gotta love HP too - hope you've been to Harry Potter World at Disney, I highly recommend! I also like cooking and reading in my spare time. It must be cool to have a twin sister, that picture is too cute!
Hi Marielle,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on Medical School! That's a HUGE wine! I'm a biology major, so I feel you one-hundred percent when you say that you're glad to be in a non-science class. I also love cooking and Harry Potter, but I think college students should start a position that makes "What are your hobbies?" an illegal question for college students. Every time that I am asked that I almost feel depressed, basically all I do is study.
Marielle,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on medical school! I'm sure that you'll be doing awesome things there, but that it's also nice to take a break from science in this course! I also love Harry Potter and the movies; HBO made Rowling's The Casual Vacancy into a miniseries that is also on HBOGo, and I highly recommend it!
It's so cool that you've also taken the India Epics class! I'm sure you're well-versed in how to succeed in the class, so I cannot wait to read more of your blog!
Hi Marielle,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on medical school! I am also aspiring to get into medical school and hopefully one day become a doctor. I read Harry Potter in high school and couldn't believe that it took me that long to get to it. I love the movies and was gifted a set of the dvd's fro Christmas one year and I love them.
Hi Marielle, it's Naomee! Huge congratulations on medical school!!! I am currently studying for the MCAT and I am just so inspired by you! It takes much drive and focus, in my opinion, to pursue a career in the medical field. That's awesome how you have accomplished one of your biggest goals. I also love cooking and eating or just seeing pictures of food! Anyway, best of luck with your last semester of undergrad!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the med school acceptance! I have a number of friends that are currently going through their first cycle right now and I can't say that I envy any of you all in the process. Also, props to you for being a working student... I don't think we give enough deference on campus to students who have to work to support themselves and are therefore not able to participate in campus life as much as they may like to.
ReplyDeleteHey Marielle! Congrats on your upcoming year! You have many exciting things planned and your future is just getting started! I like how you say your classes make you want to cry and you're still pursuing your degree, it really shows your perseverance! Hobbies can always wait for later in life as long as what you're doing makes you happy! I wish you the best in your future and can't wait to read your stories this semester!
ReplyDeleteHi Marielle!
ReplyDeleteYour majors and accomplishments sound incredible! Two majors, one minor, and accepted into medical school? I can't imagine how much work that has been, and I hope that the end of your undergraduate degree is going smoothly!
It sucks to hear that you've been too busy for your hobbies, but Harry Potter is always a good movie series to go back and watch.
That's neat to hear that you took the India Epics course before; there's a lot of stuff in there that interested me as well, but myths and folklore interested me just a little bit more. I hope to read and enjoy your stories!
Hi Marielle!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, congrats on graduation in May and getting into medical school! That is a great accomplishment and I'm sure you are relieved knowing where you are going after graduation. I can relate to you in that you've lost your hobbies to school, I feel like that some days, but at least you've found other interest aside from school in your free time. I look forward to reading other posts you have! Good luck in the course
Hey Marielle! Wow, it looks like we have so much in common! I am also a Psychology major and I also plan on applying to the OU Medical School this upcoming summer. Huge congratulations to you for getting in! That's an amazing accomplishment. I also LOVE Harry Potter and I have recently taken up yoga as well. My sister made me go to a hot yoga class where they crank up the temperature to 90 degrees and it was intense!! But afterwards it felt so nice :) Anyway, good luck in your final semester and I hope you have a good time in medical school next year!
ReplyDeleteHey Marielle! First of all, CONGRATULATIONS! I am also going to medical school in the fall, but I haven't decided where yet. I know that it's been a stressful journey so far and I'm happy that it's paying off for you! I've also tried to take up Yoga, and rest assured I guarantee my downward dog is worse than yours. Working to secure a store discount is a strategy that I hadn't even thought about. Smart!
ReplyDeleteHey Marielle, nice to meet you. First of all, congratulations on medical school! That is truly so awesome and I am sure you worked very hard to be accepted. My sister is actually in OU medical school right now, she is a third year. It is definitely a lot of work, but she loves it. Just as you, I also like to cook and workout when I can find the time for it. Sometimes I find myself working out every day and sometimes I won't workout once in a week. I am wishing you the best in your future!
ReplyDeleteHi Marielle! Congrats on getting into med school! It's been tough but it all paid out in the end, huh! It looks like you have a lot on your plate in terms of workload, with two part-time jobs and schoolwork so make sure you get some rest while you can! That picture from the 90s really brings back some memories too.. I feel like everyone's parents dressed their kids up in tacky clothes to take pictures.
ReplyDeleteHi Marielle,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on medical school! I am also aspiring to get into medical school and hopefully one day become a doctor. I read Harry Potter in high school and couldn't believe that it took me that long to get to it. I love the movies and was gifted a set of the dvd's fro Christmas one year and I love them.
Hey Marielle! You must be so proud of getting into med school! That's quite an achievement. Harry Potter is my childhood so I totally get rewatching, I do it every time ABC Family / Freeform has a Harry Potter Weekend. So, like every weekend. I also knit but I have never made a hat. I can pretty much do scarves and other things in a rectangular block.
ReplyDeleteHi Marielle! I am laughing so hard right now! I love your introduction post and I can really relate to the plight of being pre-med! I'm really excited to read your stories and I'll check out your Indian Epic stories.
ReplyDeleteHi Marielle! Looks like you must be super busy with a double major and a minor. And congratulations on getting into medical school that is so exciting. I bet you are super pumped and ready for the new challenge that is ahead of you. I hate those boring science classes too and wouldn’t want to talk about them either haha. Good luck with Med school, I am sure you will do great since you have been working part-time and doing school.
ReplyDeleteHi Marielle! Congrats on getting into med school! My roommate is pre-med and about to take the MCAT so I get a firsthand look at the stress involved. As someone who's bad at science and majoring in the humanities, I have so much respect for all of the hard work and dedication it takes to pursue a medical career. I hope everything goes well for you and am glad you get to take a tiny break from science with this class!
ReplyDeleteHey Marielle! Congrats on your acceptance to med school!! I can't imagine how stressed you must be, but it still seems like you are enjoying your last moments as a senior. I am happy hear that you enjoy going to your jobs. It seems like you have everything under control. I am actually taking the class for the Indian Epics this semester.
